AESEDA News :: Adewumi named UNESCO chair

Michael A. Adewumi, director of Penn State's Alliance for Earth Sciences, Engineering and Development in Africa (AESEDA), has been named the inaugural UNESCO chair in georesources engineering management at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. His appointment begins May 1 and will run for six months. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established UNITWIN (UNIVERSITY TWINNING and networking scheme) and the UNESCO Chairs Program as "a way to advance research, training and program development in higher education by building university networks and encouraging inter-university cooperation through transfer of knowledge across borders." In 2006, UNESCO established the UNESCO Chair in Georesources Engineering Management as a cooperative project of the University of Ibadan (Nigeria), the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and Penn State.
