As part of AESEDA's ongoing efforts to work with Nigeria to build its human and institutional capacity in the area of sustainable georesources management, AESEDA recently hosted members of the Technical Committee for the Development of a National Institute of Mining and Geology. The Committee, appointed by the Minister for Solid Minerals, plays a key role in leading the Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources Project currently underway in Nigeria. The Committee is charged with recruiting institutional partners to assist them in developing the National Institute of Mining and Geology to be located at the site of the current Jos School of Mines in Jos, Nigeria.
From September 11-12, faculty members from the Departments of Geosciences, Energy and Geo-Environmental Engineering and Geography, hosted the delegation on campus to discuss a potential partnership where AESEDA would collaborate with Nigerian leaders in government and higher education to assist them in developing a National Institute of Mining and Geology that would have the capacity to prepare graduates to be on par with peers around the globe.
During their two-days on campus, the delegation participated in round table meetings with faculty members, toured laboratories including mining and mineral processing, geosciences, and materials characterization, visited the EMS Museum and even found time to see the Graymont Limestone Mine and Quarry in Pleasant Gap.
